Best Beginner-Friendly Workouts in Murfreesboro, TN
Starting a workout routine can feel overwhelming, especially when you haven’t exercised in a while.
Maybe you’re not sure where to begin. Maybe traditional gyms make you uncomfortable. Or maybe you’ve tried jumping into intense workout programs before, only to end up sore, exhausted, and ready to quit a week later.
Here’s the good news: you do not have to start with an extreme workout to improve your health.
If you live in Murfreesboro, TN, there are several simple ways to become more active at your own pace. And if you’re a woman over 40 who is getting back into exercise, starting slowly and building a routine you can maintain is often a much better approach than trying to do too much too soon.
Here are some of my favorite beginner-friendly ways to get moving in Murfreesboro.
1. Start With Beginner Pilates
Pilates is a great option when you want to become stronger without feeling like you have to jump, run, or keep up with a fast-paced workout.
And no—you do not need to already be flexible or in shape before starting Pilates.
That’s one of the biggest misconceptions I hear.
A beginner Pilates workout can help you work on your core strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, posture, and overall body awareness while gradually building strength.
For women who feel nervous about walking into a studio full of experienced people, virtual Pilates can make getting started much more comfortable.
Through my virtual Pilates studio, you can exercise from home while receiving guided instruction designed to help beginners learn the movements and build confidence.
You don’t have to worry about what everyone else in the room is doing.
You don’t have to compare yourself to anyone.
You simply start where you are.
For women in Murfreesboro who prefer more individualized support, I also offer private Pilates sessions, where we can focus specifically on your goals, fitness level, and needs.
Best for: Women who are new to exercise, returning after a long break, or looking for a more personalized and low-impact way to become stronger.
2. Walk the Murfreesboro Greenway
Sometimes the best beginner workout is the simplest one.
Walking counts.
The Murfreesboro Greenway System offers more than 17 miles of trails, bridges, and boardwalks throughout the city. The trail system is designed for activities including walking, hiking, running, and cycling, with multiple trailheads available throughout Murfreesboro.
You don't need to start by walking three miles.
Try starting with:
Week 1: 10–15 minutes
Week 2: 15–20 minutes
Week 3: 20–25 minutes
Week 4: 25–30 minutes
Once that becomes comfortable, you can gradually increase your distance or pace.
Walking is also easy to combine with Pilates. You can use walking for regular cardiovascular movement and Pilates to work on strength, stability, mobility, and core control.
That combination can create a very manageable beginner fitness routine.
3. Take a Walk Around Gateway Island
Gateway Island is another simple Murfreesboro option when you want to get out of the house and move without committing to a strenuous workout.
The Gateway Island Trail is part of Murfreesboro's Greenway System and provides a well-lit walking and running route. Unlike most Greenway trailheads, which generally operate from daylight until shortly before sunset, Gateway Island and Trail are currently listed as open from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.
That gives you a little more flexibility if your schedule makes daytime workouts difficult.
Instead of worrying about distance when you're beginning, set a time goal.
Start with a comfortable ten-minute walk.
If that feels good after a few outings, increase it to fifteen minutes.
Small increases add up.
4. Try a Beginner Bodyweight Workout at Home
You don't need a room full of workout equipment to begin building strength.
Your own body can provide resistance.
A simple beginner workout might include:
Sit-to-stand exercises from a sturdy chair
Wall push-ups
Standing knee raises
Calf raises
Supported squats
Standing side leg lifts
Gentle core exercises
You could begin with one set of eight to ten repetitions of each movement rather than trying to complete a long, exhausting workout.
The goal at the beginning isn't to see how much exercise you can survive.
The goal is to establish a routine that you can repeat.
You can even pair a short bodyweight workout with one of your walking days.
For example:
10-minute walk + 10-minute strength routine = 20 minutes of intentional movement.
That's a workout.
5. Explore the Walking Trails at Barfield Crescent Park
If you enjoy being outdoors, Barfield Crescent Park gives you another way to turn walking into exercise without stepping onto a treadmill.
The 430-acre Murfreesboro park includes more than seven miles of paved and unpaved hiking and walking trails.
As a beginner, you don't need to tackle the longest trail.
Choose a comfortable route, pay attention to the terrain, and give yourself permission to turn around when you've had enough.
Outdoor walking can also be a nice mental break.
Put the phone away for a few minutes.
Notice what's around you.
Walk at a pace that allows you to breathe comfortably.
Exercise doesn't always have to feel like another task on your to-do list.
6. Try a Simple Low-Impact Cardio Workout at Home
Bad weather doesn't have to ruin your workout plans.
You can create a simple low-impact cardio session right in your living room.
Try 30–45 seconds of each:
Marching in place
Step touches
Heel taps
Side steps
Gentle knee lifts
Walking around the room
Rest when you need to, and repeat the circuit for 10–20 minutes.
You don't need to jump.
You don't need complicated choreography.
You don't need to finish the workout dripping in sweat for it to be worthwhile.
For a beginner, simply spending more time intentionally moving can be an important first step.
7. Combine Walking With Pilates
You don't have to choose between cardio and Pilates.
In fact, one of my favorite approaches for beginners is combining the two.
Walking provides an accessible way to increase your overall movement, while Pilates gives you dedicated time to work on strength, balance, mobility, and core control.
A beginner week could look something like this:
Monday: 20-minute walk
Tuesday: Virtual Pilates session
Wednesday: Rest or gentle stretching
Thursday: 20-minute walk
Friday: Virtual or private Pilates session
Saturday: Easy Greenway or park walk
Sunday: Rest
Notice what isn't on that schedule.
Seven intense workouts.
Two-hour gym sessions.
Punishment because you ate something you enjoyed.
You don't need any of that.
You need something you can actually continue doing next week.
What's the Best Workout for a Beginner?
The best beginner workout isn't necessarily the one that burns the most calories.
It's the one you'll actually continue doing.
Ask yourself:
Do I enjoy working out at home?
Virtual Pilates may be a great fit.
Would I feel more confident with personal guidance?
Private Pilates may make more sense.
Do I love being outside?
Start walking.
Do I only have twenty minutes?
Use those twenty minutes.
You don't need the perfect workout plan before you begin.
You need a realistic starting point.
What If I Haven't Exercised in Years?
Then we're not starting with the woman who works out five days a week.
We're starting with you.
You don't have to lose weight before beginning.
You don't have to become more flexible first.
You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on workout clothes.
And you definitely don't need to feel embarrassed because you're a beginner.
Everyone starts somewhere.
If you've been inactive for a long time, your first goal might simply be moving intentionally two or three days per week.
Once that becomes part of your routine, build from there.
A Note for Women Over 40
If you're starting over with fitness after 40, I want you to think differently about exercise.
Your workouts don't have to be punishment for what you ate.
And your goal doesn't have to be making your body look the way it did twenty years ago.
You can exercise because you want to become stronger.
Because you want to move more comfortably.
Because you want to improve your balance and mobility.
Because you'd like to feel more confident in your body.
Because you're ready to make taking care of yourself a priority again.
Start small.
One walk.
One Pilates session.
One healthier decision.
Then another.
That's how routines are built.
